Kochu Kunju Channar: The Martial Hero of Travancore
Written on December 22nd , 2024 by Nandini MenonKochu Kunju Channar, a scion of the renowned Alummoottil family, played a pivotal role in the defense and martial traditions of Travancore during the reign of Maharaja Sreemoolam Thirunal (r. 1885–1924). The Alummoottil family, once martial trainers for the kings of Kayamkulam, became generals and trainers for Travancore following Kayamkulam’s annexation. Channar inherited this legacy, combining his family’s martial expertise with a personal passion for strategy and tactics.
Although a barrister affiliated with the London Bar Council, Channar’s true interests lay in martial arts. His self-motivated quest for excellence led him to train in multiple systems: Thekkan Kalari and Adimurai in South Kerala, Vadakkan Kalari in the north, Thulunadan Kalari in the Konkan region, Varmakala in Tanjavur, and Silambam in Madurai. This extensive training made him a versatile warrior and an expert in various combat techniques.
Channar’s contributions to Travancore’s defense were substantial. He raised, maintained, and trained the kingdom’s heavy cavalry, ensuring their effectiveness in battle. His expertise extended to marine expeditionary forces, where he specialized in combat within marshy terrain and waterways, particularly in the Vembanad Lake region. His mastery of amphibious warfare was crucial in defending Travancore’s borders and securing its strategic waterways.
Channar’s martial activities and nationalist leanings brought him into conflict with British authorities. In one significant incident, the British raided the Alummoottil family estate, seizing a considerable amount of wealth. In retaliation, Channar led a small group of guerrilla fighters in a daring operation to infiltrate British forts and retrieve the stolen riches. His support for T.K. Madhavan, a freedom fighter and close ally of Mahatma Gandhi, further antagonized the British, who viewed Channar as a threat to their control over Travancore.
Despite colonial suppression, including attempts to ban Channar-run kalaris, he continued to train warriors in secret. His resilience ensured the survival of Kalaripayattu and other martial arts in the region. By integrating techniques from various systems, Channar enriched Travancore’s martial traditions and inspired future generations.
Kochu Kunju Channar’s life exemplifies courage, resistance, and dedication to preserving his heritage. His legacy remains a testament to the enduring spirit of Travancore and its martial history.
